At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when a driver deliberately drove a pickup truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Wednesday morning. The FBI is treating the incident as an “act of terrorism.”
The suspect, identified by the FBI as a 42-year-old Texas man and Army veteran, was killed in a shootout with officers. Authorities reported finding an ISIS flag in his vehicle and are investigating possible ties to terrorist organizations. Officials also revealed that the suspect recorded videos before the attack, claiming allegiance to ISIS.
The attack occurred in the French Quarter, less than a mile from the scheduled location of The Sugar Bowl. The annual college football game was postponed by 24 hours for safety concerns, according to the event’s CEO.
