Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he does not owe an apology to President Donald Trump following a tense confrontation at the White House on Friday.
During a meeting in the Oval Office, Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky in front of reporters. When asked in an interview with Fox News’ Brett Baier whether he owed an apology, Zelensky firmly replied, “No, I respect the president and I respect the American people,” and added that he didn’t believe any wrongdoing had occurred. He also expressed confidence that his relationship with Trump was not beyond repair. “Ukrainian-U.S. relations, more than with the president, are based on strong ties between our peoples,” he said, emphasizing his gratitude toward the American people, the president, and Congress.
During the confrontation, Trump chastised Zelensky, while Vance accused him of disrespect for attempting to address issues in front of the media. This led to the cancellation of a planned lunch and press conference, as well as Zelensky leaving the White House early. One of Vance’s main complaints was that Zelensky hadn’t expressed enough gratitude for the extensive U.S. aid provided to Ukraine. Trump echoed this, telling Zelensky he needed to be more thankful. However, Zelensky has repeatedly expressed gratitude for U.S. support throughout the war. Following the meeting, Zelensky acknowledged the backing of numerous world leaders. The relationship between Trump and Zelensky has deteriorated in recent months, especially after the two exchanged harsh comments regarding Trump’s ability to broker peace during the 2024 campaign, and Trump’s criticisms of Zelensky for postponing Ukraine’s elections due to the war.
