Usain Bolt’s father, Wellesley Bolt, has passed away at the age of 68, as reported by local media. He reportedly succumbed to a prolonged illness on Monday.
Wellesley played a significant role in shaping Usain’s illustrious career, which saw him win eight Olympic gold medals before retiring.
Known for his close bond with his son, he was often seen celebrating alongside the Jamaican sprinting legend after his races.
Before managing a local grocery store with his wife, Jennifer, Wellesley spent 16 years working in the coffee industry. Despite limited resources in their community, he and Jennifer provided for their family, raising Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton in Sherwood Content. Even as Usain’s global success led to improvements in the village’s infrastructure, Wellesley chose to remain rooted in his hometown.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to him, expressing condolences to the Bolt family. “Mr. Bolt was the father of a global icon and a strong, quiet force behind one of Jamaica’s greatest sons. His presence, support, and guidance helped shape a legacy that continues to inspire the world,” he stated. Holness also acknowledged Usain’s deep love and respect for his family, assuring him of the nation’s support during this difficult time.
