Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine for its “surprisingly disappointing” response to Russia’s missile attack on Kryvyi Rih, his hometown.
In a detailed post on Saturday, Zelensky accused the embassy of avoiding the mention of Russia in its statement about the attack, which killed at least 19 people and injured nearly 70. “It’s unfortunate that the U.S. Embassy’s response was so disappointing—such a strong nation, yet such a weak reaction,” Zelensky wrote. “They won’t even say the word ‘Russian’ when talking about the missile that killed children.”
After the attack, which struck a playground and restaurant in Kryvyi Rih, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink condemned the strike, saying she was “horrified” by the deaths and injuries, noting the need for the war to end. While Zelensky agreed that the war must end, he emphasized the importance of calling out Russia’s actions directly. “We must not be afraid to confront those continuing this war and rejecting peace proposals,” Zelensky said. He called for further sanctions against Russia, urging stronger global pressure on the nation responsible for the attack.
The attack was condemned by several European leaders, including European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas, who criticized Russia for its ongoing destruction of Ukraine. Zelensky stressed the importance of global responses to such attacks, saying that Kryvyi Rih and all of Ukraine had received widespread support.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the missile was a “precision strike” targeting a restaurant where military commanders and Western instructors were meeting, and that the attack had resulted in significant enemy losses, including foreign personnel.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration, since its return to office in January, has pushed for a ceasefire between the two nations.
Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. support and international strength to confront Russia’s aggression.
