A new report has shed light on former President Donald Trump’s ambitions to purchase Greenland, revealing proposals such as offering each of the island’s 50,000-plus residents an annual payment of $10,000. According to reports, the plan—cited by a U.S. official and another individual familiar with it—involved a strategic PR campaign to persuade Greenlanders that becoming part of the U.S. would be beneficial.
Although Danish officials have consistently opposed Trump’s repeated efforts to obtain Greenland, he reportedly told Congress last month, “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
Denmark currently provides Greenland with substantial financial subsidies, totaling hundreds of billions annually.
According to sources, the National Security Council held several meetings on the issue, discussing methods like social media and advertising to highlight cultural ties between Greenland and Alaska through shared Inuit heritage. The plan, notably, does not involve military force but rather aims to rely on “persuasion over coercion.”
Funding for the $10,000 payments would potentially come from tapping into Greenland’s vast reserves of natural resources, including uranium, gold, and oil. Vice President JD Vance, who visited Greenland recently, emphasized its significance to U.S. national security, citing strategic concerns over sea routes and foreign influence in the region.
