Luigi Mangione is taking center stage in Luigi: The Musical, a provocative new production set to debut June 13 at the Taylor Street Theater in San Francisco. The show, which is already completely sold out, follows the accused murderer’s dramatic rise to notoriety, echoing the arc of Roxie Hart from Chicago, the famed Broadway hit based on real-life accused killer Beulah Annan.
Joining Mangione on stage as characters are two of his current cellmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center: Sean “Diddy” Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried. The production is described as a dark comedy that reimagines the true story of Mangione — dubbed a “corporate assassin turned accidental folk hero” — as he grapples with justice, friendship, and the absurdity of viral fame.
Much like Chicago, the musical explores themes of crime, celebrity, and media spectacle through sharp satire. Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges in the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is facing a high-profile trial later this year. The federal case, which includes murder and stalking charges, could result in the death penalty if convicted.
Previews of the musical begin June 13, while Mangione’s federal trial is scheduled to start in December.
