On Wednesday in Tehran, a funeral prayer was held for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the funeral prayer at Tehran University, which was attended by thousands of people eager to enter the limited prayer area.
Following the prayer, hundreds of thousands gathered at Revolution Square (Enghelab Square) and surrounding roads to participate in the funeral ceremony at Azadi Square. Due to the increasing crowd, officials directed the public from Azadi Street to Azadi Square.
After the ceremony, Raisi’s body will be taken to Mashhad, while Amir-Abdollahian’s body will be buried in Tehran. The burial procedures are scheduled for Thursday.
On May 19, a helicopter carrying Iran’s president and foreign minister crashed in East Azerbaijan province.
Pir Hossein Kolivand, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, confirmed on Monday that all passengers and crew on board had died in the crash.
