Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to nine tax-related charges after a last-minute negotiation and extended legal discussions.
U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi accepted his guilty plea, and sentencing is set for December 16. Hunter Biden faces a maximum of 17 years in prison and fines up to $1.35 million.
Judge Scarsi inquired if Hunter Biden admitted to all charges, to which Biden confirmed his guilt.
The plea deal, announced just before the trial was set to start, avoids a potentially prolonged and damaging court case for President Joe Biden’s son.
Prosecutors had accused Hunter Biden of evading $1.4 million in taxes over four years, using funds for luxury items and services. Initially pleading not guilty, Biden later decided to plead guilty, avoiding a trial that would have featured personal and business details.
Hunter Biden’s plea also comes amid speculation about a possible presidential pardon, although President Biden has previously stated he would not grant clemency.
The case also involves a separate firearm charge, with sentencing for that scheduled for November 13.
