The local government elections in Rivers State have turned violent, particularly in Rumuepirikom, the hometown of Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, unidentified individuals entered the area before the elections, warning residents to remain indoors.
As electoral officers were set to arrive at a ward in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, armed men, believed to be political thugs, invaded the location.
Witnesses reported that the assailants opened fire, taking control of the community and instilling fear in the residents, thereby hindering their participation in the election. At least one individual suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
This violent outbreak has raised significant concerns regarding voter safety and security during the elections, as authorities work to address the situation.
