Tyka Nelson, the sister of Prince, has passed away at the age of 64. Her son, President Nelson, confirmed her death on November 5. Tyka’s half-sister, Sharon Nelson, shared that Tyka “had her own mind” and is now in “a better place.”
Tyka, who was two years younger than her famous brother, died early Monday. She was a talented musician, like her parents and brother, and released four studio albums between 1988 and 2011. Although Tyka had planned to retire from music in June with a final concert in Minneapolis, illness prevented her from performing.
Before the concert, she shared that singing was not her primary focus; she considered herself more of a writer who also enjoyed singing.
Tyka’s brother, Prince, was found dead in 2016 from a fentanyl overdose. In an interview, Tyka reflected on their last conversation, mentioning how Prince had avoided her questions shortly before his death.
Tyka also spoke about her realization of Prince’s immense fame after his passing, recalling an emotional trip to London in 2017 when fans shared how his music had saved their lives.
She and Prince had five half-siblings: Sharon, Norrine, John (who died in 2021), Alfred (who died in 2019), and Omarr Baker.
