The satirical news site The Onion has purchased Infowars, the conspiracy-driven platform led by Alex Jones, in a bankruptcy auction.
In a Thursday press release on X, The Onion announced its intention to replace Infowars’ frequent spread of misinformation—often used to sell supplements—with The Onion’s brand of relentless humor when it relaunches in January 2025.
The acquisition was supported by the families from Sandy Hook, Connecticut, who had sued Jones for spreading falsehoods about the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
In 2022, Jones was ordered to pay over $1 billion in damages, leading him to file for bankruptcy later that year. A judge approved the sale of his assets, including Infowars, in September.
Jones commented in a video on X that his legal team had been informed by the US Trustee about the shutdown, attributing the move to Connecticut Democrats and The Onion.
Although the new owners of The Onion did not disclose the purchase price, the outlet has also secured a long-term advertising partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety.
CEO Ben Collins shared on Bluesky that the revamped Infowars will be “a very funny, very stupid website,” with contributions from The Onion and Clickhole veterans.
