Liberia’s incumbent president and football legend, George Weah, conceded defeat on Friday evening as near-complete returns revealed opposition leader Joseph Boakai leading with almost 51 percent of the run-off ballots.
Weah acknowledged, “Boakai is in the lead that we cannot surpass,” in a speech broadcasted on national radio.
Despite the CDC party’s loss, he emphasized, “Liberia has won,” calling for graciousness in defeat and urging the prioritization of national interest over personal interest.
