Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, has been charged with the murder of Valerie Mack, whose remains were discovered more than 20 years ago.
Already facing charges for six other murders, the 61-year-old former New York architect appeared in court on Tuesday, pleading not guilty to a new second-degree murder charge.
Mack, a 24-year-old escort from New Jersey, went missing in October 2000. Her torso was discovered in Manorville the following month, while additional remains were found near Gilgo Beach in 2011. For years, she was known as Jane Doe No. 6 until DNA analysis identified her. Her death is one of several linked to the investigation of human remains found along Long Island’s Ocean Parkway, sparking fears of a serial killer since 2010.
Prosecutors allege that Heuermann’s involvement in Mack’s murder was confirmed through DNA evidence, including hair tied to his wife and daughter, as well as electronic data from his home.
Additionally, items seized included violent pornography and notes detailing mutilation and body disposal methods consistent with Mack’s injuries.
Heuermann was previously charged with the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Taylor, and Sandra Costilla, connecting him to these crimes through DNA, cellphone data, and witness statements.
Arrested in July 2023, Heuermann has been held without bail and continues to deny all charges. His wife has since filed for divorce.
