The Screen Actors Guild had the chance to clarify the frontrunners in this unpredictable Oscar race, but instead, they embraced unpredictability.
The papal thriller Conclave took home the award for best ensemble at the 31st SAG Awards on Sunday, disrupting Anora’s best picture momentum despite its wins from the directors’ and producers’ guilds. Given that actors make up the largest voting bloc in the Academy Awards, Conclave now holds an advantage heading into next Sunday’s 97th Oscars.
Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Demi Moore (The Substance) secured key wins for best actor and actress, with Chalamet’s victory over Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) coming as a surprise. The supporting actor categories followed expectations, with Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) taking home awards.
On the TV side, Shōgun dominated with three wins, including best drama ensemble, while Only Murders in the Building was named best comedy cast.
