Over 200,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition urging the government to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship due to his ties with Donald Trump.
The petition, launched by British Columbia author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, accuses Musk of acting against Canada’s national interests by advising Trump, who has repeatedly challenged the country’s sovereignty.
Musk, born in South Africa, holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk. Critics argue that his support for Trump’s policies—such as slashing U.S. federal government spending—aligns him with a foreign government undermining Canada’s independence. The petition, filed on February 20, calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strip Musk of his Canadian citizenship immediately.
The campaign gained significant traction, surpassing 203,000 signatures as of early Monday. While parliamentary petitions need only 500 signatures to be certified, this one has far exceeded that threshold. The House of Commons is set to resume on March 24, though a general election could be called before then.
According to Canadian law, citizenship can be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or voluntarily renounced. If revoked, Musk would have to wait a decade before reapplying. The petition’s signing period runs until June 20, 2025.
