Ukraine and the United States have reached an agreement on a deal involving critical minerals and other key resources, according to a senior Ukrainian official.
On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that securing access to Ukraine’s rare minerals was essential to ensuring continued U.S. support for the country. He described these resources as a form of “security” for past and future American investments, though his claims about the total aid provided have been widely contested.
Trump stated that the U.S. has spent $350 billion on Ukraine, though he has not provided a source for this figure. Official government records indicate that Congress has allocated $174 billion in aid since the war began in 2022.
“We need an agreement with Ukraine on critical minerals, rare earths, and other resources as security. And I believe we’re making significant progress,” Trump said on Monday during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders met to discuss a potential resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its third year.
A senior Ukrainian official has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Washington, D.C., on Friday.
