Prince Harry has stepped down as patron of Sentebale, the charity he founded nearly 20 years ago in memory of his mother, Princess Diana. Established in 2006 alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, the charity focuses on helping young people with HIV and AIDS in southern Africa. The decision comes after a breakdown in relations between the charity’s trustees and board chair Sophie Chandauka, who was appointed in 2023.
Harry and Seeiso stated that the situation had deteriorated to the point of no return, leading them to resign in a joint statement.
While the exact cause of the rift remains unclear, Chandauka claims she faced backlash for raising concerns about the charity’s governance. She alleged issues of poor governance, abuse of power, bullying, and harassment within the organization.
Sentebale confirmed the resignation but emphasized that the charity’s focus is shifting from HIV/AIDS to broader youth health, wealth, and climate resilience issues.
Chandauka also stated that she had taken her grievances to the UK Charity Commission and the High Court in London.
Harry and Seeiso indicated they would also bring their concerns to the Charity Commission.
The regulator confirmed it is looking into the matter.
