A Russian missile strike in Kyiv early Sunday claimed at least one life and injured three others, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The attack is part of an ongoing surge in long-range Russian assaults on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine’s air force reported that 23 missiles and 109 drones were launched overnight, with 13 missiles and 40 drones intercepted, while 53 drones failed mid-flight. Damage was recorded across several regions including Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, and Mykolaiv. In Kyiv, fires broke out in non-residential buildings, and an office building sustained partial damage.
Presidential aide Andriy Yermak condemned the attacks, saying Russia has no interest in peace and only understands force. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed this, urging greater pressure on Moscow, stating that such strikes are a response to diplomatic efforts and a sign that current pressure is insufficient. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it had intercepted 11 Ukrainian drones over three of its regions.
Despite ongoing U.S.-mediated ceasefire talks, both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of violating agreements to stop attacks on energy infrastructure.
Ukraine also accuses Russia of deliberately targeting civilians, including a recent attack on Zelenskyy’s hometown, Kryvyi Rih, that killed 19 people—nine of them children.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for continued international pressure on Russia to bring an end to the war and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
