At least 124 people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of the roof at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning. Another 155 individuals were transferred to local hospitals, authorities reported on Wednesday.
The cause of the collapse at the Jet Set nightclub remains uncertain as rescue efforts continue.
Cranes were used to remove debris from the wreckage. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio confirmed that at least one U.S. citizen and one U.S. legal resident were among the victims and that rescue operations are still ongoing.
The collapse occurred while a crowd, including athletes, government officials, and fans, gathered to see popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez perform.
Witnesses reported that dust started falling from the ceiling moments before the roof gave way, and calls to the 911 emergency service flooded in. Among those killed were former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, as well as Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province.
Rescue teams, including the Dominican Navy and fire service, responded quickly, with more than 100 people rescued within the first 24 hours. At least 145 people were saved in total, and 155 individuals were transported to local hospitals. Authorities are still working to determine the exact number of injuries, and the whereabouts of some victims remain unknown.
The Jet Set nightclub, which has been in operation since 1973, had undergone renovations in 2010 and 2015 and had experienced a fire in 2023. In a statement, the club expressed its condolences to those affected by the tragedy, promising support to the victims’ families.
The incident has drawn widespread reactions from public figures, with international musicians and sports stars offering their prayers.
