In a recent clash with the federal government, Minneapolis leaders have doubled down on their commitment to remaining a sanctuary city for immigrants. The Trump administration recently added Minneapolis, St. Paul, and 20 other Minnesota counties to a federal “sanctuary watch list” — a move seen by many as a warning or pressure tactic.

Despite this, the Twin Cities have made it clear they will not participate in federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Minneapolis Ward 9 Council Member Jason Chavez took to Facebook to respond, saying, “The Trump administration placed us on a sanctuary watch list. Let’s be clear: we’re not violating immigration law — we’re simply refusing to do the federal government’s job.”

Chavez emphasized that Minneapolis’s policy, known as the separation ordinance, is designed to protect immigrant residents by ensuring city employees and law enforcement do not inquire about immigration status unless legally required. He reaffirmed that the city will continue to uphold this ordinance as a matter of principle and public trust.

Calling on the public to stay engaged and hold officials accountable, Chavez stressed the importance of community support in defending local protections for immigrants. “Minneapolis will remain a welcoming city to all our neighbors,” he added, urging an end to anti-immigrant scapegoating in political discourse.

Through its ongoing stance, Minneapolis continues to embody the spirit of sanctuary — choosing inclusion and compassion in the face of federal scrutiny.
