The FDA has issued a recall for Hilltop Meadow Farm’s “60 Day Aged Pepper Jack Raw Milk Cheese” due to the discovery of potentially fatal listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture advises consumers to discard batches with a sell-by date of September 21.
Listeria can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable groups.
The recall follows a safety inspection revealing the presence of the bacteria.
While no reported illnesses are linked to the product, the FDA urges caution, as listeria is a significant cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S.
If symptoms occur after consuming the product, individuals are advised to contact their physicians promptly.
The bacteria can be present in various environments and contaminate foods like raw vegetables, seafood, meats, and unpasteurized milk.
