The Federal Government granted approval on Wednesday to exempt universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision, emphasizing that these institutions will now manage their staff remunerations independently.
The move aims to provide autonomy for efficient operation in public educational institutions, as explained by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
This decision is unrelated to the integrity of IPPIS but focuses on upholding the autonomy granted to universities by their governing laws.
The government introduced IPPIS in 2006 to enhance transparency and accountability in personnel record-keeping, but it faced resistance from academic unions like ASUU, advocating for the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
The ongoing disagreement has resulted in strikes and disruptions in academic activities.
