Toyota has issued a “Do Not Drive” advisory for 50,000 older vehicles in the US, urging immediate repairs due to potential explosions in Takata-made airbag inflators, linked to over 30 deaths since 2009.
The recall involves models from 2003 to 2005, including Corolla and RAV4.
Takata faced significant issues, resulting in the largest auto safety recall globally.
In 2017, Takata filed for bankruptcy, and its assets were acquired by Chinese-owned Key Safety Systems.
Toyota faces additional challenges, suspending vehicle shipments due to irregularities in diesel engine certification tests and addressing misconduct at subsidiary Daihatsu.
Despite these issues, Toyota remains the top-selling carmaker globally, with a record 11.2 million vehicles sold in 2023.
