The House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a bill proposing a potential nationwide ban on TikTok, citing concerns about its ties to the Chinese government and espionage risks.
If enacted, the bill would require TikTok’s separation from its parent company, ByteDance, within 165 days, or face removal from US app stores.
TikTok opposes the legislation, arguing it would infringe on Americans’ free expression rights.
The bill also aims to limit US companies from selling personal information to foreign adversaries.
Despite bipartisan support in the House, the bill’s fate in the Senate remains uncertain.
