Last week, armed attackers in Kaduna State abducted 286 students and staff from a school, demanding a ransom of N1 Billion for their release, according to Jubril Aminu, a community leader.
This marks the first mass abduction in Nigeria since 2021.
A few students managed to escape unhurt from the incident in Kuriga town.
The kidnappers called Aminu on Tuesday, demanding the ransom within 20 days, threatening to harm the captives if not paid.
Idris Ibrahim, an official, confirmed the ransom demand, stating that efforts were underway to trace the caller.
Governor Uba Sani met with Minister of State for Education, Hon. Yusuf T. Sununu, pledging additional resources for psychosocial support.
Despite this, there has been no immediate response from Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner of internal security.
Nigeria’s information minister, Mohammed Idris Malagi, emphasized the government’s stance against ransom payments, with legislators instituting penalties for such transactions amid rising kidnapping cases.
