Reality TV star Khloé Kardashian stirred controversy with her recent Halloween costume, posted on her Instagram account on October 31.
Kardashian shared a series of photos showcasing her dressed as a Bratz doll, donning a yellow mini-dress, matching beret, and a handbag adorned with the toy’s logo.
However, the focus quickly shifted to her makeup, notably her foundation, which many people perceived as noticeably darker than her typical skin tone.
Commenters inundated the post, accusing Kardashian of “blackfishing,” a term used to describe when white public figures, including influencers and celebrities, use makeup, tanning, and specific hairstyles to appear as though they are of Black or brown heritage.
Some expressed their disapproval with comments like, “Pretending to be a Black or brown woman is not acceptable,” while others questioned, “Is blackface okay now?” This sparked a conversation on whether her costume and makeup choices resembled blackface.
This is not the first instance of Khloé Kardashian facing accusations of blackfishing. Fans previously noticed her apparent darkening of her face and body complexion in a 2021 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In that same year, she also faced criticism for her makeup and hairstyle choices at a Hulu press event, where she was accused of cultural appropriation.
