Nigerian music sensation, Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, claimed the inaugural “Best Afrobeats” accolade at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.
The 2023 edition marked the introduction of a new category, “Best Afrobeats,” featuring prominent nominees like French superstar Aya Nakamura, and Nigerian artists Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
Despite the unfortunate cancellation of the award ceremony due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, the winners were officially announced on Sunday, November 6, 2023.
Rema emerged as the victorious “Best Afrobeats” artist, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz secured the “Best African Act” award.
However, Rema and Selena Gomez’s collaboration, ‘Calm Down,’ missed out on the “Best Collaboration” category, which was claimed by Jung Kook and Latto for ‘Seven.’
Notably, Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy faced disappointment, losing in three categories: “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Live Performer.” This follows his earlier setback of losing all seven nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
Meanwhile, American pop sensation Taylor Swift led the pack with a remarkable three wins at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards, securing honors for “Best Video,” “Best Artist,” and “Best Live.”
