Tina Knowles, the woman credited with bringing Beyoncé into the world, took to Instagram to fiercely defend her daughter against “ignorant, self-hating, racist” remarks following Beyoncé’s stunning appearance at the premiere of “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”
In a passionate post, Knowles addressed the criticism surrounding Beyoncé’s new look, emphasizing the theme of the film, which featured a silver ensemble and platinum hair. She condemned those who speculated that Beyoncé was attempting to emulate a white woman, expressing frustration at the perpetuation of such narratives within her own community.
Knowles highlighted the long-standing tradition of Black celebrities, including the legendary Etta James, sporting platinum hair, challenging the notion that it equates to trying to be white. She shared a video reinforcing the cultural significance of being a “brown skin girl” and stressed that Beyoncé embodies and amplifies this identity.
Despite acknowledging that Beyoncé might be displeased with her post, Knowles declared she had reached a point of frustration and felt compelled to speak out. Several celebrities, including Cynthia Erivo, Octavia Spencer, and Keke Palmer, voiced their support in the comments, praising Knowles for raising strong, proud, and intelligent Black women.
