At the U.N. climate summit in Dubai, governments introduced new measures on Saturday to advance clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
A notable initiative involved 118 nations committing to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030, aiming to decrease the proportion of fossil fuels in the world’s energy production.
This pledge, supported by key players like the European Union, United States, and UAE, aspires to eliminate CO2-emitting fossil fuels from the global energy system by 2050.
The comprehensive announcements at COP28 also addressed decarbonizing the energy sector through strategies such as expanding nuclear power, reducing methane emissions, and restricting private finance for coal power.
Notably, China and India signaled support for increasing renewable energy but did not endorse the overall commitment to simultaneously reduce fossil fuel usage.
