Following the attack, a nearly six-hour standoff with police ensued, during which Schulz engaged in a phone conversation with 911.
The victim, identified by locals as Robert Skafte, was impaled through the torso.
Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The suspect barricaded himself in a nearby apartment unit, leading to the involvement of negotiators, SWAT, the drone unit, and the bomb squad.
