Actress Glynis Johns, best known as Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins, passed away on Thursday at the age of 100 in a Los Angeles assisted living facility.
She succumbed to natural causes. Mitch Clem, her manager, expressed sadness, stating, “She is the last of the last of old Hollywood.”
Apart from her iconic role in Mary Poppins, Johns had notable film roles in Superstar (1999), While You Were Sleeping (1995), and The Court Jester (1955).
Additionally, she made a mark on Broadway, winning a Tony for her performance in Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music.
Sondheim wrote the song specifically for Johns, gaining further recognition when Frank Sinatra covered it in 1973.
The song achieved gold status, and subsequent covers by Judy Collins, Olivia Newton-John, and Barbara Streisand further contributed to its enduring popularity.
Throughout her career, Johns received nominations for an Academy Award and an Oscar for her movie performances. She is survived by one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
