Singer Mandisa, known for her powerful gospel music and her appearance on “American Idol” in 2006, has died at the age of 47, as announced on her official social media.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Mandisa was celebrated for her uplifting songs and her advocacy for those navigating life’s difficulties.
Originally from Citrus Heights, California, Mandisa began singing in church and pursued music education at American River College and Fisk University. Her exceptional voice shone during her time on “American Idol” alongside other notable contestants.
Although she exited the show in the top 10, Mandisa embarked on a successful music career, releasing her debut album “True Beauty” in 2007, which reached the top of Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart and garnered Grammy nominations.
Her subsequent albums, including “Overcomer,” which earned her a Grammy in 2014, reflected her faith and resilience.
Mandisa also dealt with personal challenges, notably experiencing depression following the death of a close friend to cancer. She openly shared her mental health journey in her 2022 memoir, “Out of the Dark,” in hopes of inspiring and supporting others facing similar struggles.
