American Bryan Hagerich avoided a lengthy prison sentence under Turks and Caicos’ strict gun laws and returned to the U.S. after paying a fine. Hagerich, who was found with ammunition in his luggage earlier this year, was sentenced to a suspended 52-week term and fined $6,700 by a judge on Friday. After paying the fine, he received his passport and returned home without serving the sentence.
Speaking at Pittsburgh International Airport after reuniting with his family, Hagerich expressed relief, saying, “The weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders.” He added that he was grateful to be home but mentioned that three other Americans were still in Turks and Caicos. Hagerich described his experience as “the darkest days of my life” and said he wouldn’t be returning to the island.
Initially facing a potential 12-year sentence under strict laws meant to curb rising crime and gang violence, the judge found exceptional circumstances and deemed the mandatory minimum unjust for Hagerich’s case. He expressed his elation at returning home to his children after paying the fine.
Hagerich was arrested in February after 20 rounds of hunting ammunition were found in his checked luggage. He pleaded guilty, explaining to ABC News that he had forgotten the ammunition was in his bag. He emphasized that he had no criminal intent.
The Premier of Turks and Caicos, C. Washington Misick, stated that the sentencing reflected the Firearms Act’s provision for exceptional circumstances and the commitment to judicial independence, ensuring both safety and compassion.
Meanwhile, four other American tourists face similar charges, with three still out on bail in Turks and Caicos. Hagerich noted that his case set a precedent and vowed to continue efforts until all affected Americans were home.
