“The Outsiders” won the best musical award, and “Stereophonic” was named best play at the 2024 Tony Awards, celebrating Broadway’s finest on Sunday night.
“Hell’s Kitchen,” a jukebox musical inspired by Alicia Keys’ life, and “Stereophonic,” a play featuring original songs by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, led the nominations with 13 each. Although “Hell’s Kitchen” didn’t win best musical, its star, Maleah Joi Moon, won her first Tony Award for best lead actress in a musical.
This year, several film and TV stars received Tony nominations, including Jessica Lange, Rachel McAdams, Sarah Paulson, who won best lead actress in a play, and Daniel Radcliffe, who won best featured actor in a musical for “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Ariana DeBose hosted the main event for the third consecutive year, while Julianne Hough and Utkarsh Ambudkar hosted “The Tony Awards: Act One,” where several awards were presented before the TV broadcast. The show featured performances from all best musical nominees, including a surprise act by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, and a number from “Stereophonic.”
