Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the new 6,000-capacity venue, Edo Arena, will be named after global afrobeats star Rema.
This announcement was made during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in Benin City on Wednesday.
Rema, who was in town for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, attended the ceremony and helped lay the first block for the arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome.’
The arena is being constructed on the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road.
Governor Obaseki stated that the arena will host various events, including concerts, national conferences, and symposiums.
He also mentioned that the venue will attract visitors to the state, showcasing its rich culture and creating job opportunities for the youth.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, is a Benin City native and has been an influential ambassador for Edo State through his music.
His recent song ‘Benin Boys,’ featuring fellow Edo artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to the city.
