A federal judge has rejected Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request to be released before his trial on charges of sex trafficking and other serious offenses.
In a nearly two-hour hearing in a New York City courtroom, Magistrate Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky sided with the U.S. Attorney’s office, which argued that Combs poses a threat to the public, particularly potential witnesses in the case.
Despite Combs’ not guilty plea earlier in the day and his defense team’s offer of a $50 million bond and home detention, Judge Tarnofsky declined the proposal.
After hearing arguments from both sides and consulting privately with court officials, the judge ordered that Combs remain in custody. However, Combs’ legal team plans to appeal the decision to the District Court, though it’s unlikely the ruling will be overturned.
Following the hearing, Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, confirmed their intention to challenge the judge’s decision. The U.S. Attorney’s office has yet to comment on the ruling.
Combs, 54, was arrested on September 16 at a luxury Manhattan hotel amid a federal investigation. He faces charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for prostitution. If convicted, the Grammy-winning rapper could face life in prison.
The next court hearing is scheduled for September 24, though no trial date has been set.
