The Supreme Court recently rejected R. Kelly’s certiorari petition along with several others.
As previously reported, R. Kelly is serving two major sentences: 30 years for federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York, and a concurrent 20-year sentence from federal child sex abuse charges in Chicago.
This latest Supreme Court appeal was tied to the Chicago conviction, which stemmed from the 2003 PROTECT Act, a law that extended the statute of limitations for child abuse cases.
Kelly’s legal team argued that the alleged crimes, which took place in the 1990s, were outside the statute of limitations since they predated the law. However, the Supreme Court declined to review the case without providing further explanation, likely signaling the end of his appeal efforts for these charges.
This decision doesn’t close the larger legal battle, though.
In August, a New York judge ordered Universal Music Publishing Group to pay $500,000 in royalties to Kelly’s victims. Despite his convictions, Kelly’s music remains available on platforms like Spotify, where he still has nearly five million monthly listeners.
In a related development, R. Kelly’s ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, recently announced her upcoming tell-all book, Under the Red Carpet, set for release in December.
She promises the book will reveal significant truths, expressing frustration that people have spoken about her life without truly knowing her. Married to Kelly from 1996 to 2009, Andrea Kelly says it’s time to share her story openly without fear.
