Most of Erik and Lyle Menendez’s family members support their release for the 1989 murders of their parents, but their mother Kitty’s brother disagrees.
Milton Andersen, who is 90 years old and represented by victim’s rights attorney Kathy Cady, argues that the brothers should at least serve their life sentences for killing his sister. Cady stated that Andersen believes the claims of molestation are false and that the motive behind the murders was sheer greed.
Erik and Lyle, then aged 18 and 21, shot and killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home over 40 years ago. They have maintained that they acted in self-defense due to sexual abuse from their father, Jose.
However, Andersen remains unconvinced, noting that during the trial, one of the brothers referred to their mother’s murder as a “mercy killing.”
Cady also suggested that Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is leveraging the brothers’ case to gain support for his re-election, expressing hope that the final decision will be made for the right reasons rather than political motives.
The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.
