Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, recently sworn in, has reassigned two deputies, Nancy Theberge and Brock Lunsford, who petitioned for the resentencing of Erik and Lyle Menendez.
The brothers, who were convicted for the 1989 murders of their parents, are serving life sentences without parole.
Theberge and Lunsford had filed a 57-page petition in October, highlighting the brothers’ rehabilitation and requesting resentencing to 50 years to life, which would make them eligible for parole.
Theberge, previously leading the resentencing unit under former DA George Gascón, will now move to the Alternate Public Defender’s office, while Lunsford is no longer part of the DA’s post-conviction unit. The court had set a resentencing hearing for Wednesday, but it has now been postponed until late January by Judge Michael Jesic.
Hochman, who took over from Gascón, has stated that he needs to review the facts, evidence, and law thoroughly before making a decision on the case.
Public figures like Kim Kardashian, Ryan Murphy, and Rosie O’Donnell have supported the brothers, citing new evidence of severe sexual abuse and advocating for their release or parole.
