Luigi Mangione has been indicted for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan earlier this month, according to newly unsealed court documents.
Mangione faces an 11-count indictment, which includes charges of first-degree murder and second-degree murder, along with weapons and forgery offenses. A Manhattan grand jury also indicted him on second-degree murder as a terrorism-related crime.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the murder as a “well-planned, targeted” act intended to shock and intimidate, occurring in a busy part of the city. The shooting, which took place on December 4, endangered public safety, he said.
The 26-year-old Mangione, who is not contesting his extradition to New York, will face an extradition hearing in Pennsylvania on Thursday. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence without parole.
Murder in the first-degree charges are rare and typically require aggravating factors such as the victim being a public official or the crime involving terrorism. The indictment marks progress toward justice for Thompson and his family, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Investigators believe Mangione, a former high school valedictorian and Ivy League graduate from a wealthy family, was motivated by anger toward the health insurance industry and corporate greed, as noted in an NYPD intelligence report. Mangione’s legal team has filed petitions for writ of habeas corpus and bail, which will impact his extradition process.
