Boxer Paul Bamba, 35, has passed away just days after claiming the WBA Gold Cruiserweight title. His manager, Grammy-winning artist Ne-Yo, confirmed the news on social media.
On December 21, Bamba secured his 14th consecutive stoppage victory within 12 months by knocking out Rogelio Medina in New Jersey. This achievement broke Mike Tyson’s long-standing record for the most professional fights in a single year.
Less than a week later, Ne-Yo, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, issued a heartfelt statement:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend, and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives. He was a fierce yet confident competitor with unrelenting ambition. More importantly, he was an exceptional individual who inspired many with his drive and determination. We are heartbroken and ask for privacy as we navigate this difficult time.”
Following his title win, Bamba had expressed ambitions for his next fight, calling out Jake Paul as the influencer-boxer’s best chance at a legitimate title shot. “Jake talks a lot about wanting to be a world champion. My message to him is simple: I have something you want—a real title,” Bamba said in an interview with Bloody Elbow.
In response to Bamba’s death, Jake Paul shared a brief tribute on social media, writing, “RIP Paul Bamba.”
A Puerto Rican and a Marine Corps veteran, Bamba turned professional in January 2021 and climbed the boxing ranks to achieve a 19-3 record. His sudden passing has left the boxing community in mourning.
