Vanessa Williams has shared the heartbreaking news of her mother Helen’s passing in London, shortly after celebrating her 85th birthday.
Helen, a longtime music teacher, had traveled to London to watch Vanessa’s debut in the West End musical The Devil Wears Prada, where Vanessa stars as Miranda Priestly, and to mark her milestone birthday. Tragically, during her visit, Helen’s health declined rapidly, and she passed away on December 28 due to complications from acute liver failure.
Vanessa, who has withdrawn from a week of performances, shared the news on Instagram, writing: “On December 28th, the world lost a powerhouse, dynamo, and force of nature packed into a 5ft frame. Our mom, Helen Williams, aka Gaga to many, took her final bow in London 20 days after celebrating her 85th birthday surrounded by family and friends.”
Reflecting on her mother’s legacy, Vanessa added, “It’s impossible to describe all she meant to everyone because each person saw a different facet of her. Loyal friend to many, icy stares to a chosen few. We will miss it all.” She concluded by sharing plans to honor her mother’s remarkable life.
The post was met with an outpouring of condolences from fans and friends, including actress Audra McDonald, who wrote: “Oh Vanessa. I’m so so so sorry. I’m sending you all such love, comfort, and light. Love you.”
The Devil Wears Prada announced Vanessa’s temporary departure, stating: “Due to a sudden loss in her family, Vanessa Williams will not be appearing from Wednesday, January 8 to Wednesday, January 15. During this time, Debbie Kurup will play the role of Miranda Priestly. Vanessa will return on Thursday, January 16.”
Helen Williams, born December 8, 1939, in Buffalo, NY, dedicated over 40 years to music education in Ossining and Manhattanville School Districts and also taught as a professor at Manhattanville College. She and her late husband, Milton A. Williams Jr., who passed away in 2006, shared two children: Vanessa and her brother Chris Williams.
