A man who claimed to have a gun was taken into custody at UnitedHealthcare’s Minnesota headquarters on Monday, just months after the company’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was allegedly shot dead in Manhattan by Luigi Mangione, according to reports.
The unidentified suspect was spotted in the parking lot of the UnitedHealthcare corporate campus in Minnetonka. Authorities said he made contact with police after arriving at a security checkpoint and parking his vehicle. “The call was about somebody who should not be on the campus,” said city spokesperson Andy Wittenborg.
While inside his car, the man allegedly requested a negotiator, claimed to be armed, demanded $1 million, and warned he wouldn’t be taken alive. After about an hour of negotiations, he surrendered peacefully. Police later confirmed via X.com that he was taken into custody without incident and that there was no threat to the public.
Officials have not determined his motive but stated there’s no indication the incident is connected to the December 5 murder of Brian Thompson. Thompson was fatally shot in midtown Manhattan on his way to an investor meeting.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a five-day manhunt and charged with first-degree murder, terrorism-related offenses, weapons possession, and other charges. He has since gained a cult following, with over $500,000 raised for his legal defense and public support from figures like comedian Bill Burr.
Mangione’s legal team, however, has asked fans to limit the number of photos they send him while in custody, as the overwhelming volume has slowed processing. He remains incarcerated while awaiting trial.
