Adobe is preparing to launch a mobile version of its AI image generator, Firefly, aiming to rival OpenAI as the Microsoft-backed firm continues to expand its visual AI tools.
The announcement was made during Adobe’s MAX creativity conference in London, where the company revealed that the Firefly app will be available soon on both iOS and Android, though no exact release date was given.
“Creative people think on the go,” said Alexandru Costin, VP of Adobe Firefly, during an interview. He envisions the app as a constant creative companion, allowing users to brainstorm ideas—like ad campaign concepts—while commuting, enabling them to arrive at work with ready-made mood boards.
Adobe also unveiled its newest AI advancements: Firefly Image Model 4, Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, and a new Firefly Video Model, which is now generally available. These tools can generate highly realistic images and videos from text prompts while ensuring commercial safety by filtering out copyrighted content.
This move highlights Adobe’s ongoing push to integrate AI deeper into its creative suite, as competition intensifies from companies like OpenAI and Runway.
OpenAI recently went viral with a ChatGPT feature that generated anime-style images and toy-like portraits, causing such high demand that CEO Sam Altman said it was overloading their GPUs.
Despite acknowledging the increasing competition, Costin emphasized Adobe’s openness to collaboration. The company has already partnered with OpenAI, Google, and Runway to enhance Firefly with diverse AI tools. “Competition is great,” Costin said. “We believe in a range of models with unique strengths. These partnerships fuel innovation and help us better serve creative professionals.”
