Greenland’s new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, expressed strong criticism on Sunday of U.S. remarks regarding the island, calling them disrespectful. He emphasized that Greenland “will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone,” in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s previous interest in acquiring the strategically important Arctic territory. Nielsen made the statement during a joint appearance with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the second day of a three-day official visit. Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has been moving toward eventual independence. Nielsen added that the language used by the U.S. had been inappropriate, and he stressed the need for unity in such matters. The visit was framed as an opportunity to strengthen future cooperation between Greenland and Denmark, with Frederiksen also reiterating Denmark’s commitment to invest in Greenland’s society, not just for historical reasons, but due to their shared relationship within the Danish commonwealth.
Both leaders were asked about the possibility of meeting with Trump, to which Frederiksen responded affirmatively, emphasizing their clarity regarding the Kingdom of Denmark’s approach to the matter.
