Sean “Diddy” Combs officially declined a plea deal on Thursday that could have lessened his potential prison sentence, choosing instead to go to trial. When asked by Judge Arun Subramanian if he was rejecting the government’s offer, Combs responded, “Yes I do, your honor.” The 55-year-old music mogul is set to face trial starting Monday, with jury selection beginning on charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and prostitution. Prosecutors allege that Combs coerced women into repeated sexual encounters referred to as “freak-offs.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey noted that a guilty plea would have reduced Combs’ sentencing exposure, but conviction at trial could lead to a de facto life sentence. Details of the proposed plea were not disclosed.
Combs appeared in court wearing a beige jail uniform, greeting his legal team with a smile, hugs, and a fist bump. His attorney, Teny Geragos, raised concerns about public comments made by Lisa Bloom, a lawyer for two of Combs’ civil accusers, to a documentary. The judge responded that all parties would be reminded to follow court conduct rules to ensure a fair trial.
Combs was initially charged last year in a sweeping indictment that has since been expanded, accusing him of leading a criminal enterprise that facilitated long-term sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including a recent superseding indictment involving coercing a former employee into sexual acts.
Jury selection begins May 5, with opening arguments scheduled for May 12. Prosecutors may call up to 20 witnesses in addition to three main accusers.
If convicted, Combs could face several decades to life in prison.
