A Federal High Court in Kano has invalidated all actions taken by the Kano state government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law.
In a ruling on Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman ordered all parties to maintain the status quo.
This ruling suggests that Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and the four other Emirs who were dethroned by the emirate law are now reinstated to their positions.
Previously, lawmakers in Kano had repealed the law that established the additional four emirate councils (Karaye, Bichi, Gaya, and Rano), which were created by the former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje. Governor Ganduje had executed the law by dethroning Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and reinstating the dethroned 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.
A kingmaker in the former Kano emirate, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, had challenged the state government’s actions in court, represented by his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), asking the court to declare the law null and void.
