Former President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night his intention to visit Springfield, Ohio, in the coming weeks, but the town’s Republican mayor isn’t too thrilled.
During a rally in Long Island, New York, Trump mentioned his plans to visit both Springfield and Aurora within two weeks.
Earlier this month, Trump sparked controversy by making unfounded claims during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging that the Haitian migrant community in Springfield were eating pets, a claim that city officials later debunked.
Despite these baseless allegations, the town has faced bomb threats and had to cancel several events, including a cultural festival.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has since sent state troopers to Springfield to protect public schools due to increased threats.
Springfield’s Republican mayor, Rob Rue, expressed concerns about Trump’s visit, calling it an “extreme strain” on local resources and suggesting it would be better if the visit didn’t happen.
Gov. DeWine also noted that while a candidate’s visit is usually welcomed, this one could further stretch the town’s resources.
Earlier in the week, DeWine dismissed the pet-eating claims as “garbage” and urged people to stop discussing them.
