Over 8,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while Instagram had over 4,000 reports by 1:44 p.m. Eastern time.
Earlier this year, a similar outage affected hundreds of thousands of users worldwide for over two hours, with Downdetector recording 550,000 disruptions for Facebook and 92,000 for Instagram.
