Donald J. Trump was elected as the 47th president early Wednesday, four years after losing to Joseph R. Biden Jr.
His win was finalized around 5:30 a.m. Eastern when he won Wisconsin, a key swing state, pushing him over the required 270 electoral votes.
Trump is the first Republican to achieve this since George W. Bush in 2004.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat makes her the second Democratic woman in eight years to be nominated for president but fail to make history with a victory. Her campaign announced she would address the nation on Wednesday.
In addition to the presidency, Republicans gained control of the Senate, with key victories from Bernie Moreno in Ohio, Jim Justice in West Virginia, and Deb Fischer retaining her seat in Nebraska.
The House of Representatives remains undecided as officials continue counting ballots in many races. These results will decide if Washington will see a divided government or if Republicans will secure both Congress and the presidency.
